A Brief History of Our Church
Sonrise Christian Fellowship began as an outreach to neighborhood kids during the summer break in 1983. By the fall of that year, a small group of believers committed to the authoritative teaching of the Bible began to meet for worship at Kingston Elementary School on the Mesa.
They called Pastor Angel Suarez and his wife Julie to be their first full-time pastor in 1985. They arrived here after four years of seminary study at Trinity Seminary, Deerfield, Illinois in July of that year. Pastor Angel and his wife have three children.
The church built and moved into its current facilitites in March, 1990. A loan from EFCA and a Note (Bond) program made the financing possible.
The church changed its name in August 1999 from Evangelical Free Church of the Mesa to its current name, Sonrise Christian Fellowship.
September 2002, Pastor Angel left Sonrise and moved to Arizona with his family. Pastor George served as interim pastor for one year and was called to be the senior pastor in September 2003
In August of 2007 Pastor George stepped down from the ministry and the church called Steve Zimmer, a graduate of Phoenix Seminary, as their interim pastor.
Pastor George Rubio, a graduate of Talbot Theological Seminary was called in 1996 to be associate pastor.
